SEC Taps Wall Street for 24-Hour Trading Push
The SEC will convene a Sept. 17 roundtable on 24-hour U.S. equity trading as 24 Exchange already operates toward 23-hour weekday sessions.

The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission will host a public roundtable on Sept. 17, 2026, to work through what it will take to operate U.S. equity markets around the clock. The session is scheduled at the SEC’s Washington headquarters from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. ET and will stream live on the agency’s website.
Bitcoin.com reports that the panelist list reads like a cross-section of market infrastructure — exchanges, clearinghouses, brokers, and asset managers, including NYSE, Nasdaq, BlackRock, Citadel Securities, Robinhood, DTCC, and Interactive Brokers.
What the Commission wants to work through
The agenda is aimed at the operational mechanics of nonstop trading rather than a high-level policy speech: exchange and broker-dealer readiness, surveillance for overnight sessions when fewer people are watching the tape, and clearance and settlement through hours U.S. cash equities have not historically traded.
SEC Chairman Paul Atkins has framed the work as part of a broader push to modernize U.S. equity market structure. Staffing the table with the firms that would have to run the plumbing is a signal the agency wants operational buy-in before it writes new rules, not after.
The market is already moving
Parts of the industry are not waiting for the roundtable to finish. Nasdaq has targeted Dec. 6 for a near-23-hour trading day, pending final regulatory sign-off. 24 Exchange has already received SEC approval to operate a national securities exchange with roughly 23 hours of trading five days a week.
That combination — an approved 23/5 exchange already in the market, a major listing venue preparing an overnight session, and the Commission convening the full stack of intermediaries — is why this particular date matters.
